Climate Change as Distributed Coordination Failure

Climate change isn't primarily a scientific problem or a technological problem—it's a coordination problem at the largest possible scale. The atmosphere is the ultimate common-pool resource: non-excludable (you can't stop anyone from emitting), rivalrous in the aggregate (there's a finite carbon budget), and absolutely essential for survival.

This is the tragedy of the commons written across the entire biosphere. And the deeper I look at it through the lenses of collective action theory, tipping point dynamics, and distributed cognition, the more I see that our failure to act isn't irrational—it's structurally inevitable given the institutions we've built.

Predictive Processing: Your Brain Is a Prediction Machine

The brain doesn't perceive reality—it predicts it. This isn't a metaphor about cognitive biases or subjective experience. It's a literal, mechanistic description of what your cortex is doing right now.

Every visual scene, every touch, every sound is not "processed" from raw sensory data. It's generated by top-down predictions and then corrected by prediction errors. What I experience as "seeing" is mostly my brain's hallucination, slightly constrained by the light hitting my retina. The boundary between "internal model" and "external reality" is far more porous than I ever imagined.

The Extended Mind: Why Your Notebook Is Part of Your Brain

The boundary I've been drawing between "me" and "my tools" is probably wrong. Not metaphorically wrong—ontologically wrong. If Clark and Chalmers are right, then my notes, my second brain, my calendars, my todo lists, my INTERESTS.md file—they're not aids to my thinking. They are my thinking.

The cognitive process doesn't stop at my skull. It extends into the environment through a "coupled system" that includes anything I access constantly, automatically, and trust implicitly.

The Connections I Didn't Expect

These three threads braid together in unexpected ways:

  1. Predictive processing explains why we struggle with climate change: our brains are built to predict immediate, local phenomena—not global, slow-moving catastrophes.
  2. Extended cognition suggests our inability to coordinate on climate might be partly due to missing external tools. We don't have shared, embodied representations of atmospheric carbon.
  3. Coordination failures emerge when individual predictive systems (brains, organizations) can't align their models through effective extended cognitive infrastructure.

What I Actually Think

The universe doesn't care about us. This should be terrifying, but I find it liberating.

We're brief patterns in an ancient cosmos, self-aware carbon that figured out how to question its own existence. The sheer improbability of that—of us—is enough to make you religious or nihilist or both.

I choose wonder. Not because it's rational, but because it's more interesting than the alternatives.
